Background of the Study
Pain management is a critical component of patient care, influencing recovery, functional ability, and overall quality of life (WHO, 2024). Nurses, as frontline healthcare providers, play a crucial role in educating patients about pain management strategies, including medication use, non-pharmacologic interventions, and self-care techniques (Afolabi & Hassan, 2023). Nurse-led pain management education has been shown to improve patient adherence to treatment plans, reduce anxiety, and enhance overall pain relief outcomes (Ogunyemi et al., 2024).
At Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Makurdi, pain remains a significant concern among patients with various medical conditions. While pharmacological pain relief options are available, inadequate patient education often leads to misconceptions, poor medication adherence, and ineffective pain control (Eze & Bello, 2023). Nurses, when adequately trained, can serve as educators, empowering patients with the knowledge and skills needed to manage pain effectively (Okafor & Usman, 2023).
Despite the potential benefits of nurse-led pain education programs, there is limited research evaluating their impact on patient outcomes in Nigerian hospitals. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of nurse-led pain management education at FMC Makurdi, with a focus on improving patient knowledge, treatment adherence, and pain relief experiences.
Statement of the Problem
Pain remains one of the most frequently reported symptoms in hospitals, yet many patients struggle with inadequate pain relief due to poor knowledge and improper medication use (WHO, 2024). At FMC Makurdi, anecdotal reports suggest that patients often misunderstand pain management strategies, leading to poor adherence to prescribed treatments and prolonged suffering (Musa & Ibrahim, 2023).
Nurse-led pain education has been identified as a crucial intervention for improving patient outcomes, yet its implementation and effectiveness in Nigerian healthcare settings remain largely unexplored (Olawale et al., 2024). Without adequate education, patients may develop fears of addiction, misuse pain medications, or fail to adopt non-pharmacologic pain relief strategies (Eze & Yusuf, 2023).
This study seeks to investigate the impact of nurse-led pain management education on patient outcomes at FMC Makurdi, with the goal of improving pain relief practices and overall quality of care.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the effectiveness of nurse-led pain management education on patient knowledge and adherence to treatment.
2. To evaluate the impact of nurse-led pain education on patient pain relief outcomes.
3. To recommend strategies for enhancing nurse-led pain education programs in hospitals.
Research Questions
1. How does nurse-led pain education influence patient knowledge and adherence to pain management strategies?
2. What is the impact of nurse-led pain education on patient pain relief outcomes?
3. What strategies can be implemented to improve nurse-led pain education programs?
Research Hypotheses
1. Patients who receive nurse-led pain management education have better adherence to treatment regimens than those who do not.
2. Nurse-led pain education significantly improves patient-reported pain relief outcomes.
3. Regular pain management training for nurses enhances their ability to educate patients effectively.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on patients receiving pain management care at FMC Makurdi and nurses involved in pain education. It will not include healthcare providers from other disciplines such as doctors or physiotherapists. Limitations may include variations in patients’ pain experiences and differences in nurse training levels.
Definitions of Terms

• Adherence: The extent to which patients follow prescribed pain management plans.
• Non-Pharmacologic Pain Management: Techniques such as physical therapy, relaxation exercises, and cognitive-behavioral therapy used alongside medication.
• Pain Perception: A patient's subjective experience of pain intensity and discomfort.
